Before & After
Treatment Instructions....

Sclerotherapy

BEFORE TREATMENT - Take a shower and have your normal breakfast or lunch on the day of your treatment. Do not apply any cream, lotion, or moisturizer to your legs. Avoid aspirin and other medication containing aspirin for 5 days prior to your treatment.

Wear loose-fitting clothes and comfortable walking shoes. Remember to always bring your compression stockings with you.

AFTER TREATMENT - You will have a gauze bandage held in place by adhesive tape at every injection site. If your physician chooses to bandage your leg, this should be removed 24 hours later or as instructed by your physician. Before removing bandages dressed with adhesive tape, wet tape thoroughly.

Compression stockings or panty hose are worn immediately after your procedure. These are designed to decrease swelling, provide compression to the treated veins, and promote collateral circulation. After 24 hours, compression stockings are worn for an additional 2 days, but you may take them off at bedtime.

Walking 20-30 minutes per day is encouraged. Avoid strenuous activity like jogging, bicycling, stair-master, elliptical, weight lifting, and high-impact aerobics for one week after your treatment session.

Expect to see bruising, pigment changes, localized tenderness, or lumpiness. These are all temporary conditions that usually resolve weeks after the procedure. Contact Reflections Vein Center staff if you experience prolonged tenderness, redness, or warmth along treated areas, excessive swelling in the treated limb, chest pain and/or shortness of breath.                                                    (TOP)

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) and Closure Procedure

BEFORE TREATMENT - Avoid aspirin and medication containing aspirin for 5 days prior to your procedure. On the day of your procedure, take a shower and have your normal breakfast or lunch. Do not apply any cream, lotion, or moisturizer to your legs.

Call our office if you become ill with a fever within 1 week of your appointment.

If you choose to take a physician prescribed oral sedative prior to your procedure, you must arrange for family or friends to take you home after the procedure is completed. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home.

Wear loose-fitting clothes and comfortable walking shoes.

AFTER TREATMENT - You may return to normal activities as soon as possible. In general, your physical activity will be determined by how your legs feel. Walking 20-30 minutes per day is encouraged, but do refrain from strenuous activity for 7 days. In the early days following your procedure, your legs may tire more easily and you may experience some swelling. If this is the case, simply sit and elevate them above heart level if possible.

Pressure bandaging and/or steri-strips, as well as compression stockings, will be put in place after the procedure to decrease swelling, promote collateral circulation, and increase the rate of healing. You will wear compression stockings for a continuous 48 hours. After 48 hours, bandages may be removed. Before removing bandages dressed with adhesive tape, wet tape thoroughly. You will then wear compression stockings or panty hose for an additional 12 days, removing them at bedtime only. Steri-strips may be removed 7 days after the procedure if they haven't already fallen off.

After the bandaging is removed, you may shower or bathe normally. Blot over the steri-strips. Do not rub the treated area. Dry skin thoroughly. It is normal to experience some tenderness and lumpiness at the access site and along the area of the treated vein. Expect to also see some bruising and maybe some pigment changes. All are temporary conditions and usually resolve themselves within a few weeks following surgery.

Prescription pain medication is usually not required following this procedure. The discomfort you may experience following the treatment can be relieved with 1-2 tablets of Extra-Strength Tylenol or Ibuprofen every 4-6 hours as needed.  Avoid aspirin.  Should there be a need for a stronger pain medication, we will gladly provide that for you simply by calling our office. Contact Reflections Vein Center staff if you experience prolonged tenderness, redness or warmth along the treated limb, moderate to severe pain preventing return to normal activities, excessive swelling in the treated limb, chest pain and/or shortness of breath.                                     (TOP)
